Performing Other Worlds: Joshua Serafin In Conversation with Low Kee Hong and Victor Wang
Description
Join artist Joshua Serafin for a presentation, followed by a conversation with Low Kee Hong, Artistic Director of the 26th Biennale of Sydney (2028) and Creative Director of Factory International Manchester, and Artspace Executive Director Victor Wang, exploring the shifting place of ritual, spirituality and performance in contemporary art.
Working across performance, choreography, moving image and installation, Serafin's practice draws on precolonial Philippine cosmologies, queer embodiment and speculative mythmaking to explore the body as a site of historical, spiritual and social transformation. Through works including VOID and PEARLS, Serafin considers how ritual and performance might challenge inherited structures of identity and representation while imagining alternative forms of collective existence.
Following Serafin's presentation, the artist joins Low Kee Hong and Victor Wang to explore how contemporary artists are expanding the boundaries between performance, exhibition-making and everyday life. Together, they will consider new approaches to spectatorship, collective participation and the possibilities of cultural institutions as spaces for experimentation.
Presented as part of Joshua Serafin's research and development residency with Artspace, with more to be announced soon.
