Morag Gamble's Permaculture Film Club October screening: Becoming Animal

Price FREE Get tickets

Event description

Welcome to our Permaculture Film Club for October - BECOMING ANIMAL - about the work of award-winning ecological philosopher, educator and author David Abram. It was David who coined the term "the more-than-human world" in 1996. His book Becoming Animal: An Earthly Cosmology is the basis of this film.

Each month the Permaculture Education Institute sponsors wonderful films and conversations, hosted by Morag Gamble. Come and join in! They are always free, but we love if you can donate - we send this 100% to refugee-led and locally-adapted permaculture programs.

2 SCREENINGS

  • Saturday 5th October, 9-11am AEST (In Americas - Friday 5th October)
  • Saturday 5th October, 7-9pm AEST

ABOUT THE FILM

An inspired collaboration between filmmakers Emma Davie (I Am Breathing) and Peter Mettler (The End of Time) and radical writer and philosopher David Abram (The Spell of the Sensuous), Becoming Animal is an urgent and immersive audiovisual quest, forging a path into the places where humans and other animals meet, where we pry open our senses to witness the so-called natural world—which in turn witnesses us, prompting us to reflect on the very essence of what it means to inhabit our animal bodies.

Shot in and around Grand Teton National Park, with its dizzying diversity of wildlife, trails of curious humans in RV’s and billion-year-old geology, the film is a geyser of provocative ideas and heightened sensations related to the sublime circuitry that connects us to our ever-shifting surroundings. A snail’s body becomes an immense landscape as the soundscape immerses us in shivering leaves, rushing rivers and the weird spacey pitch of elk bugling at night.

Becoming Animal embraces the sensory tools of cinema to trace how the written word and technology has affected how we see.Driven by wonder, curiosity and a desire for balance between ecological and technological imperatives, Becoming Animal is an invitation to explore our relationship with this “more than human world” and recognise it for what it is: an exquisitely intricate system in which everything is alive and expressive, humans, animals and landscapes are inextricably interdependent, and there is no such thing as empty space.

ABOUT OUR FREE MONTHLY FILM CLUB

This event is part of Permaculture Education Institute's monthly permaculture film club series. We screen permaculture-related films each month and host a global conversation inspired by the film. THIS IS A ‘PAY WHAT YOU CAN’ EVENT - WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MONEY?

Whilst our film clubs are free events, we do warmly welcome your generous donation. We always send 100% of all donations received via our registered charity, Ethos Foundation. Any donation received from this event will go towards permaculture food forest nurseries and planting in East African refugee camps and locally-led classes to show youth how to set up and maintain a perennial food forest. People have been living in these camps for decades - perennial food systems are so much more reliable, robust, and abundant, and help to fight the hunger and poverty experienced every day.
