Event description

AIMS - Allied Interpreter Mentorship & Support (in collaboration with FAB Auslan Entertainment Interpreter Service & Deaf Connect) is so excited to be bringing the amazing Tiffany Hill (@coolaidgrape) to Australia for two weekends of workshops in Sydney and Perth

Many of you will be familiar with Tiffany’s Street Leverage articles broaching the subject of racial diversity in the ASL interpreting field. You may have also seen her incredibly free, ASL music translations on Instagram and YouTube. Now we’ve got the chance to learn from her in person (or online) right here in Australia!

For the first time in Australia, Tiffany will be leading two full days of hands-on workshops in both Sydney and Perth:

Sydney - Saturday 27- Sunday 28 September 2025

Deaf Connect Training Room Parramatta, NSW

Tiffany will be presenting 4 fabulous workshops including one on music translation.

Developing our IQ - Cultural Clashes in the Interpreting Sphere.

As Sign Language Interpreters, we daily face not only ethical decisions but also the challenge of navigating unfamiliar cultural borders. This workshop examines decision-making by unpacking cultural assumptions and their impact on interpreting, with discussion on diverse spaces, cultures, and code-switching. Participants will consider biases and apply new strategies to guide more ethical practices when handling cultural clashes. Through dialogue, they will explore how race and culture intersect in interpreting and develop a deeper understanding of cultural capital and its impact on the field.

Educational Objectives:

  • Identify lived experiences of cultural presumptions in interpreting

  • Distinguish professional vs. faulty decision-making steps

  • Apply new concepts to support ethical choices

  • Create action plans to reduce barriers and negative outcomes
