Description

Join us this afternoon for a range of brilliant queer films from Australia.

Buttercream – World Premiere

Ruby Busuttil

Rose, a young Maltese-Australian woman, inherits her Nanna Marija’s cupcake business when Marija passes away. In order to cope with the loss, Rose takes on far more than the recipes her Nanna left behind. Assuming Marija’s identity, Rose avoids grief by escaping into a magical 1960s dreamscape.

Sparks fly when Rose meets Clara, the new checkout girl at a milk bar she supplies cupcakes to. Unexpected feelings force Rose to face love and loss in a search for the secret ingredient her Nanna never told her.

Big Johnny – World Premiere

Jeanie Kane

After an unexpected encounter with Melbourne’s vibrant drag scene, a lonely warehouse worker must find the courage to embrace his true self when traditional male expectations threaten to hold him back.

Threads – World Premiere

Abbey King

On the morning of her wedding, 23-year-old Milly is struck by severe cold feet. Her carefully planned day unravels further when her dress rips, and the only person available to fix it is her ex-girlfriend, Ingrid (23). The two reflect on their time together as a couple, causing unanswered questions and unresolved feelings to resurface.

Small Town Pride

Nathan Dyer

In the remote outback Australian town of Kununurra (pop. 4,515), a small but fearless queer community works to keep their annual pride celebration alive.

SoyBoy – World Premiere

Moo Renzaho

When infamous conservative media outlet 'The Daily Larrikin' becomes the target of a federal investigation into so-called “discriminatory hiring practices”, producers Jack and Tom scramble to come up with a way out of the ensuing legal trouble that will undoubtedly cripple the company

To Freely Flourish – West Australian Premiere

Victor Wu

It is 2017 in Sydney Australia, in the height of the Marriage Equality debate and the word 'Love' is everywhere. But for Peter, an Australian-born Chinese adolescent exploring his sexuality, it is the meaning of love and family itself that he is grappling with, against the background of his parents' constant bickering and his father's aloofness resembling nothing of the ideals he sees in the political campaigns.
