Laureate Professor and Immunologist Peter Doherty AC received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1996 for his breakthrough research in discovering the role of T cells in the immune system and how the body’s immune cells protect against viruses. In 1997, he was named Australian of the Year and is the author of several books for the general reader, including A Light History of Hot Air, The Beginners Guide to Winning the Nobel Prize, Sentinel Chickens: What Birds Tell us About our Health and our World and Pandemics: What Everyone Needs to Know”.
