Event description
Join us for some Monday night magic... Break all the rules - be a CLOWN! 🎭
Our monthly jams offer a blend of structure and spontaneity for clowns of all experience levels - a welcoming space for discovery, failure, and JOY.
Guest Teacher: NATHANIEL FISHBURN
Nathaniel Fishburn (he/they) is a Philadelphia-based actor and clown with recent roles including Saint Peter in the Stagecrafters' The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (2024) and in The Waiting Room (Philadelphia Fringe Festival 2025). In Chicago, he was a company member of The Conspirators Theatre, a group that performs exclusively in a high-energy Neo-Commedia style known as The Style. Nathaniel is an experienced writer, dramaturg, and producer who is currently working on a solo show based on Nikolai Gogol's The Overcoat—a very Russian comedy about a man who needs a new coat which then ruins his life.
Workshop Focus: Neo-Commedia Style
Nathaniel will be leading an introductory workshop on Neo-Commedia style. The Style combines the basics of classic Commedia dell'Arte with intense emotional states and influences like Kabuki, Kathakali, Bugs Bunny and a high-energy punk-rock esthetic that a critic once called "a coke-fueled clown nightmare." This workshop will provide the foundations, including emotional state work, entrances and exits, giving focus (in Style terms, "the food"), and partner work.
