Overtures: Stories, Legends & Landscapes
MCM Philharmonic Orchestra
Hansel and Gretel - fairy tale
William Tell - legend
Fingal’s Cave - landscape
Romeo and Juliet - story
Join the MCM Philharmonic Orchestra for a concert filled with drama, romance, adventure and enchantment. From the instantly recognisable galop of Rossini’s William Tell to the sweeping passion of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, this is music that knows how to tell a story.
Step into the dark and magical world of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, where a simple children’s tale becomes a sumptuous orchestral journey of danger, mystery and wonder. Then travel north to the wild Scottish coastline with Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides (Fingal’s Cave), one of the great musical evocations of landscape and atmosphere.
These four famous works demonstrate the extraordinary power of the orchestra to transport us — to the Swiss Alps, an enchanted forest and a windswept Scottish island.

PARKING
The City of Melbourne has changed the parking restrictions around the Southbank Campus. Parking control hours are now expanded to 7am–10pm, seven days per week, and are capped at three hours. A $2-per-hour fee after 7pm is also now in place. There is no change to the $4-per-hour peak rate between 7am–7pm. Parking inspectors are regularly in the area fining drivers who overstay their meter, so we encourage everyone to be aware and avoid an expensive fine.
ACCESSIBILITY
We are committed to making our events accessible and will accommodate requirements wherever possible. All venues at the Southbank campus are wheelchair accessible. Please contact us at fineartsmusic-tickets@unimelb.edu.au if you have any questions.
