Description

Through his collaborative partnership with Martin Luther King, Jr., West Chester native and civil rights activist Bayard Rustin played a pivotal role in orchestrating a movement of non-violent resistance that would not only change the course of history but would also alter the quality of life for marginalized communities of color across the country. Singing City will join forces with Philadelphia Voices of Pride, Anna Crusis Feminist Choir, and One Voice Choir of Minneapolis to perform Steven Milloy’s narrated choral work entitled Bayard Rustin: The Man Behind the Dream.

Temple Performing Arts Center is located on N Broad Street on Temple University's campus. Parking is generally available in the Liacouras Center Garage on 15th Street. The main entrance includes steps and there is a wheelchair accessible entrance on the north side of the venue at the corner of Broad Street and Polett Walk near the Univesity Gate. Singing City Choir began in 1948 as Philadelphia’s first integrated choir and has been bringing people together through music for more than 75 years. Founded by Dr. Elaine Brown, it grew out of the Fellowship House movement, rooted in the belief that music can build bridges across race, religion, culture, and belief—and serve as a force for healing and hope.

Singing City is more than a choir—it’s a movement. With nearly 100 members from all walks of life, we create a vibrant community where diversity is celebrated, voices are united, and music becomes a catalyst for connection. Our programming is as varied as our membership, ranging from Tin Pan Alley favorites to songs of protest and great works of the choral canon.

Known for both artistry and inclusivity, Singing City has performed with ensembles including The Philadelphia Orchestra, Leningrad Philharmonic, and Israel Philharmonic, and has toured nationally and internationally to critical acclaim. Today, under the leadership of Artistic & Music Director Rollo A. Dilworth, Singing City continues to fulfill its mission with education programs for youth, a youth choir, and initiatives for underserved communities.
