Description

Singing City's Fall Concert will feature music that highlights the lives of five Philadelphia change agents who challenged injustice and fought for social change: anti-slavery abolitionists Lucretia Mott and Harriet Tubman; minister and composer Charles Albert Tindley; and vocal artists Marian Anderson and Paul Robeson. Repertoire for this performance include Stand Up (from the movie “Harriet"), movements from Mendelssohn’s Elijah, to be performed by internationally renowned mezzo-soprano and Philadelphia native Marietta Simpson, and the Philadelphia premiere of Here I Stand, composed by Carlos Simon and based on the life of bass-baritone Paul Robeson.

Friends Center is located at the intersection of 15th Street and Cherry Street in Center City. There is a ramp entrance to the building and accessible seating available in the concert space. Singing City Choir began in 1948 as Philadelphia’s first integrated choir and has been bringing people together through music for more than 75 years. Founded by Dr. Elaine Brown, it grew out of the Fellowship House movement, rooted in the belief that music can build bridges across race, religion, culture, and belief—and serve as a force for healing and hope.

Singing City is more than a choir—it’s a movement. With nearly 100 members from all walks of life, we create a vibrant community where diversity is celebrated, voices are united, and music becomes a catalyst for connection. Our programming is as varied as our membership, ranging from Tin Pan Alley favorites to songs of protest and great works of the choral canon.

Known for both artistry and inclusivity, Singing City has performed with ensembles including The Philadelphia Orchestra, Leningrad Philharmonic, and Israel Philharmonic, and has toured nationally and internationally to critical acclaim. Today, under the leadership of Artistic & Music Director Rollo A. Dilworth, Singing City continues to fulfill its mission with education programs for youth, a youth choir, and initiatives for underserved communities.
