Art Book Making and Publishing workshop with Matt Dunne from Tall Poppy Press
Event description
The Perth Centre for Photography is pleased to present;Â
Art Book Making and Publishing workshop with Matt Dunne from Tall Poppy Press
Calling all artists. Feature your work in an art book and walk away with your very own dummy.Â
This workshop aims to provide you with enough skill to turn your art into a book. Whether that be through self publishing, handmaking your own editions, or approaching a publisher, we will delve deeply into bookmaking and publishing, learning how to make a great book that will live up to your expectations.
This workshop is all about asking YOU to consider what you want for your project. We will peel back the curtain and look at the nitty gritty, including book costs, quality, sequence, mistakes, and how distribution works.
This workshop is for artists from any background who would like to feature their work in a publication.Â
For anyone thinking of participating, it's best to have some art work in progress, but keep in mind your work for a book doesn't have to be fully realised. We will provide feedback on how to make your book complete just as you envisage.Â
This workshop will suit people who want accurate, honest, and clear information.
Split over two days, we will focus on the following topics:
- An introduction to book making and publishing
- Editing and sequencing for a book (where you'll have a chance to practice with your own art and receive feedback)
- Design for non-designers
- What printers, designers and publishers need from artists, what artists need from printers, designers and publishers
- First books: successes and mistakes
- Money: how much does a book cost, and how much does a book make?
- Book as platform: when publishing is done, where to next?
Each person will leave with an A5 or A4 sized dummy they have hand-bound.

About the facilitator
Matt Dunne, founder and owner of Tall Poppy Press - Matt has been a teacher for his whole adult life so workshops are fun, hands on, interactive and enjoyable. No lectures here. Matt's made handmade books, small run zines, had a book published by a publisher and runs a publishing business - he's done a bit of everything and knows a lot about how it works and how to get started.
Tall Poppy Press is a Melbourne-based publisher of photography books, workshops, and merchandise. Our aim is to publish excellent Australian photography, or collaborations between Australian and non-Australian artists.
At Tall Poppy, we believe in emerging artists, financially fair models of publishing, and making books somewhere between a coffee table tome and a zine. We like imperfection, texture, and things that feel joyful.
