Physical activity for healthy ageing: An evidence update
Description
You are invited to an evening lecture by Professor Cathie Sherrington, a physiotherapist and internationally recognised public health expert in healthy ageing, physical activity and falls prevention.
Professor Sherrington was involved in the evidence reviews and recommendations in the latest Australian physical activity guidelines. She will present a summary of the evidence in a relatable way, and is pleased to answer questions but will refrain from giving individual health advice.
Professor Sherrington holds a PhD and a Master of Public Health, and her clinical background includes over a decade of first hand experience in aged care and neurological rehabilitation. Ranked top researcher internationally for falls prevention research by Scopus.
Academic & Institute Roles: Professor at Sydney Medical School, and Deputy Director of the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health (IMH), leading the Physical Activity, Ageing, and Disability Research Stream.
Research & Professional Leadership: NHMRC Leadership Fellow, Director of the Centre of Research Excellence in the Prevention of Fall-related Injuries, President of the Australia and New Zealand Fall Prevention Society, and co-founder of PEDro (Physiotherapy Evidence Database).
Research & Academic Impact: Professor Sherrington has secured over $35 million in funding and authored 400+ refereed articles, backed by an h-index of 97. Her work evaluates exercise interventions via numerous randomized trials and systematic reviews, focusing on evidence-based physical programs and digital health tools to promote mobility in older adults and disabled individuals.
Major Awards: She received the NSW Premier's Prize for Science (Biomedical) and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and the Australian College of Physiotherapists
