Description

‘If physical activity were a drug, it would be a miracle cure.’

Join us for a dynamic half-day study session with the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine, designed to build confidence and skill in having meaningful conversations about physical activity with patients.

Across 12 focused, fast-paced 15-minute sessions, we’ll explore practical, condition-specific approaches for integrating movement into everyday clinical practice. Each mini-session highlights a different long-term condition—helping you tailor advice, overcome common barriers, and use motivational language that resonates with patients’ realities.

Expect evidence-informed guidance, real-world examples, and plenty of opportunities for reflection and discussion.

  • Dr Hugh Bethell

    Dr Hugh Bethell

I qualified in medicine in 1966. My early career included a stint as a Cardiac Registrar at Charing Cross Hospital where I first encountered the use of exercise for treating heart disease – ground breaking at the time. In 1974 I abandoned cardiology and entered general practice in Alton in Hampshire. There I set up an exercise programme in the Alton Sports Centre for patients recovering from heart attacks and other cardiac ailments and operations. Since then I have written extensively on exercise for heart disease. In the early 90s I was the driver for setting up the British Association for Cardiac Rehabilitation (now the British Association for Cardiac Prevention and Rehabilitation) and became its first President. Over the past 12 years I have expanded the Cardiac Rehab of our CR Centre activities to embrace those with other problems, particularly those which increase the risk of coronary disease – high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes et al. I have also become particularly interested in the exercise treatment of degenerative diseases, disability and frailty in later life, all of which are promoted by an inactive lifestyle. My aim is to encourage regular physical activity for all for disease prevention, increasing longevity and most of all leading to a healthy and enjoyable old age.
