Physics Gymnasium 2024, Lecture 2: Generation of electricity and power: efficiency, reliability and sustainability
Event description
Come along to Lecture 2 of 5 in our Physics Gymnasium Series for 2024 to hear our speaker, Professor Rachel Webster, discuss how the warmth of the Earth could power our next generation:
Victoria's Latrobe Valley houses Australia's biggest coal plant, but what if we could generate power using the coal while it’s still in the ground? Geothermal energy offers a clean, sustainable alternative. Imagine using Earth's internal furnace to generate power! Aligning well with electricity, power generation and society themes in VCE Physics Units 1 to 4, this lecture will also explore how a 'Smart Geothermal Industrial Loop' could be the key to sustainable power generation and a future less reliant on fossil fuels such as natural gas. Tap into the potential of geothermal - Victoria's hot new energy source!
Come along to the Hercus Theatre (near the corner of Swanston and Elgin Streets/Tin Alley) at 5:45 pm for light refreshments, for a 6 pm start. The lecture will be 40-50 minutes with time for some questions at the end.
Whilst this is an in-person event, a Zoom link will be sent out to all participants in the hour before the lecture to ensure that our far-flung friends can still come along virtually.
See you there!
