Food Waste Tie Dye and Plant Dye Basics

Event description

There are many colors available to us in what may seem like "waste" fit for the compost or trash - such as onion skins, avocado pits or even used black bean cooking water.  As we enter the season of gathering  to share meals and memories, why not be in the know about what you can save and contribute to your dye pot?!  This practice can also give new life to old, worn out clothing and kitchen wares extending their lifespan and easing our landfills.

Participants will receive:

  • Pretreated cloth napkins or a tea towel ready to dye (you will leave the class with one of a kind item for your next gathering or meal!)
  • Hands-on instruction on how to pretreat fabric for lasting color
  • Several food waste dyes to work with in class and guidance on how to prepare them at home
  • Overview of tye dye methods to obtain a variety of patterns and shapes
  • Handouts with step by step tutorials on fiber preparation, tips for setting up a dye studio of your own, and access to videos covering several dye methods including eco printing, bundle dying and immersion baths should you wish to continue this practice outside our class time
