Plant your grief - Death Cafe

“We plant what we cannot carry, and tend what it becomes.”

Last year we hosted an event where guests 'planted their grief'. These intentions are now budding sprouts, ready to be transplanted into our very own Grief Garden in the East Coburg Neighbourhood house back yard.

This October, we invite your grief to rest in this same garden where we give it potential to grow into something tangible. Here you can watch the slow and transformative work of decay, the invisible part of our life cycle often hidden from public view. Our Grief Garden is open for all of our community to use as memorial and education space and we welcome care takers and collaborators.

During our yarning space we invite you to share what you yearn for in your grief and collective care.

We invite consideration to our existing memorial spaces, who we see, and who we don't see being represented.

What are we doing, and what can we do to make our memorial space something that invites us back?

After our death cafe yarns, we offer a planting activity as we move our Grief Garden into its new home

WHAT TO BRING: An organic item to 'bury' in our garden, before we lay in last years plants such as a picked flower, a leaf, feather, a piece of fruit or a vegetable, an image or writing on paper. These items will be photographed in the garden before being covered with soil and a few worms (so please no citrus)

Our space is intersectional, designed and hosted by LGBTIQA+, Indigenous/First Nations and disabled folk. Allies are welcome to attend. "Death Cafes" are a social franchise hosted globally - a simple format created to help engage.

• Street parking only.

• One disability car park outside the front of the building on Glengyle Street.

• A nature strip then a double footpath small step down or wheelchair over nature strip to path from car onto nature strip

• Ramp access to the front door.

• Door handle - left hand turn to open. Door opens inwards and to the left

• Internal hallways and doorways a narrow fit. Fits most wheelchairs

• One accessible toilet with baby change table

• Low pile carpet throughout except for Sunroom (floorboards) and kitchen (tiled)
