Planting For Success: A How-to Guide with Terence Huang - Nov. 19, 2026
Description
Just in time for fall planting season, Planting for Success will help you get your new California native plants off to a strong start.
California native plants have unique adaptations, and how you plant, mulch, and water them can make all the difference in how their roots develop and how well they establish over time. Building on the principles covered in Right Plant, Right Place, this class focuses on what to do once you’ve chosen the right plants for your space.
Join botanist and gardener Terry Huang as he guides you through best practices for planting and caring for your plants during their first year of establishment and beyond. You’ll learn how to prepare and test your soil, assess the light conditions in your space, develop watering methods and routines that encourage resilient root systems, and explore different approaches to mulching.
Terry Huang loves finding creative ways to make plant science and gardening fun and approachable. By drawing from his formal training and practical experiences, he can guide you wherever you are on your gardening journey. So, if you have a growing interest in California native plants - but don't know where to start - he is here to help!
Terry is currently the Director of Living Collections at South Coast Botanic Garden and in his free time is an instructor for the Theodore Payne Foundation. He holds a MSc in Biodiversity and Taxonomy of Plants (Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh) and has worked in many public gardens in a variety of climates.
