Platypus Planting Day 2024

Event description

We are hosting a community planting day on the Moorabool River to protect and enhance critical Platypus habitat and discuss the threats and conservation of this iconic Australian animal.

In May 2021 MCLG members undertook Platypus surveys throughout the waterways of the Moorabool Catchment using an innovative technology known as Environmental DNA (eDNA). eDNA involves taking a water sample from a waterway, which is then screened for Platypus DNA fragments back in the lab. The results of these surveys show us that there is Platypus in the middle reaches of the Moorabool River.

We're inviting you to a community planting day along the Moorabool River, which we now know thanks to MCLG volunteers is critical Platypus habitat. This is the third year in a row we have hosted our community planting day, and we are thankful for all of the hard-working volunteers that make this project possible.

The planting day will also include a discussion on Platypus conservation in the Moorabool Catchment and what the community can do to help our local Platypus populations. Through community engagement we will ensure the preservation and enhancement of vital Platypus habitat for generations to come and enhance the native vegetation cover in our landscape.

No prior experience is needed, and all are welcome. Morning tea will be supplied on the day.

This project is proudly supported by funding from the NAB Foundation and the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority.

Getting there
We will be meeting at the Moorabool River crossing on Dollys Creek Road, Morrisons. If you search 'Dollys Creek Road, Morrisons' in your transport app it can take you further north of the crossing. We recommend turning onto Dollys Creek Road from Ballan-Meredith Road as the roads are in better condition. You can find a map below showing the meeting point.

What to bring
Sturdy shoes/gum boots, warm clothes, rain jacket, beanie, gloves and snacks.
