Event description

Plus61J Media presents: How should we define antisemitism? Debates over the IHRA and Jerusalem definitions.

Global efforts to define antisemitism have generated enormous debate in recent years. The 2016 IHRA definition has had been adopted by dozens of countries and many more universities, associations, labor unions and NGOs; however, critics argue it has a chilling effect on criticism of Israel. A new definition, The Jerusalem Declaration (2021), claims to clarify the "limits of legitimate political speech and action concerning Zionism, Israel, and Palestine". It too has faced a legion of detractors.

Why are efforts to define antisemitism neccesary? And what might be the problem with definitions rendered too broad or narrow?

These are some of the questions set to be tackled in a timely conversation between DOV WAXMAN (University of California, LA) and JEREMY JONES (Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council), and hosted by journalist DEBORAH STONE.
