“Poderosas” Book Celebration with Alicia Rojas and Gustavo Arellano

Alicia Roja’s works are vibrant documentations of the rich communities of which she is a part and we celebrate her work as an 18th Street Arts Center-Creative Corps, (a pilot initiative of the California Arts Council,) and her book, Poderosas.” Join us, along with Journalist Gustavo Arellano for chats, selfies, a video short, chips, & salsa.
Alicia Rojas's portrait series, and the broader "Poderosas" project includes 6 oral histories, a digital archive, a brass sculpture and monument located at Latino Health Access headquarters in downtown Santa Ana, CA. The publication, "Poderosas" features 63 portraits that highlights the cohort member's individuality and simultaneously showcases their unbeatable strength when they all came together to care and advocate for their community as a collective body in the same way worker bees serve as an example of collective work. This public art project is funded through a fellowship awarded by Alicia Rojas, this public art project is funded through a fellowship awarded by 18th Street Arts Center-Creative Corps, a pilot initiative of the California Arts Council, and an awarded grant by the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC). This project is also supported by Grand Central Art Center (GCAC), Latino Health Access (LHA), the Office of Orange County Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento, Second District and the City of Santa Ana.
This event will take place at 18th Street Arts Center, Olympic Campus, indoors at the Hearth.
