Event description

We are pleased to continue our collaboration with our sister city, Christchurch, as we welcome poet and author Isla Huia to the Adelaide City Library.

Isla (Te Āti Haunui a-Pāpārangi, Uenuku) is a te reo Māori teacher and kaituhi from Ōtautahi. She will visit Adelaide in April to headline the Context Writers Festival as part of an Adelaide-Christchurch Sister City Exchange.

Following her Festival appearance, Isla will take up a Residency at the City Library, where she will lead masterclasses designed for poets at all stages of their creative journey. These sessions are focussed on inspiring creativity, building confidence and skill development in the art of writing poetry.

Isla Huia has been published in journals such as Catalyst, Takahē, PŪHIA and Awa Wāhine, and she has performed at numerous events, competitions and festivals around Aotearoa. Her debut collection of poetry, Talia, was released in May 2023 by Dead Bird Books, and was shortlisted for the Mary and Peter Biggs Award for Poetry at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards 2024. Her work has also been featured in the International Institute of Modern Letters’ Ōrongohau Best New Zealand Poems, in 2023 and 2024.

The City Library is the largest of our libraries. This modern library is located on one level and offers a variety of programs and services for everyone.

Getting Here

The city centre is serviced by all forms of public transport including trains (Adelaide station 650m), trams (closest stop Rundle Mall 280m) and buses (closest stops in Grenfell Street - F4 and G2 northern side and T3 and T2 southern side).

For public transport routes and timetables see the Adelaide Metro website.

If you are already within the city or North Adelaide, the Adelaide Free connector bus is a great option. The large loop (98a and 98c) connects North Adelaide and the City, while the small loop (99a and 99c) connects the inner city areas that are not serviced by the tram.

Please note that Rundle Mall is a vehicle free zone. For those with mobility issues, we recommend entry from Grenfell Street (through Da Costa arcade or Rundle Place (see above).

The closest taxi rank is on the southern side of Grenfell Street, near Gawler Place, or on Pulteney Street, near Hungry Jacks.

The closest car park is Rundle Place car park, located on Level 6. There are several other off-street car parks nearby, including UPark Gawler Place Gawler Place and Rundle Street.
