Event description

“A nature positive future for the Barwon River system”

A webinar series presented by Friends of the Barwon for 2024-2025.

Friends of the Barwon is an incorporated community group launched in 2018 to protect and restore the long-term health of the Barwon River system.

“Nature positive” is a global goal for nature which aims for the repair and regeneration of nature – species and ecosystems – rather than it’s decline (DEECA 2022). ‘Nature Positive’ recognises that we all have an increasing role to play in reversing biodiversity decline. The world's first global nature positive summit will be held in Sydney in early October 2024.

Since European colonisation, the Barwon River system (Barwon, Yarrowie/Leigh, Moorabool rivers, tributaries and wetlands) has been suffering death by a thousand cuts. To what degree is repairing or regenerating species and ecosystems possible, considering the barriers imposed by agriculture, urbanisation, population growth, global warming, our laws and land tenure? How will we measure success?

To join the webinar you will need to register through Humanitx and shortly after you will receive a link for you to join the webinar on 20th September.

Please note:

  • We will run the webinar through Microsoft Teams. If you are accessing it from your Smart Phone or Tablet, you will need to download the Microsoft Teams App to be able to dial into the event. If joining from your PC or laptop, you won’t need to download Microsoft Teams software.
  • We will record the event and share the link soon after.
  • At the end of the webinar you will be directed to a survey for your feedback about the webinar content and technology used, and to help us shape future webinars.

The Friends of the Barwon webinar series will showcase the most up-to-date regional research and understanding of our freshwater environment. The first two seminars entitled “Pollution Dilution - Is Dilution the Solution to Pollution??” focus on pollutants in our waterways and explore how species and ecosystems respond to these pollutants.

Pollution dilution - part two will focus on pesticides, herbicides, nutrients and a case study will be presented. Date to be confirmed November 2024, featuring three presenters:

  • David Tiller, Karoo Consulting, ex. EPA
  • Brady Hamilton, Deakin University
  • Scott Seymour ex. Aquatic Systems Management p/l

Further webinars in this series are planned for 2025 and may include groundwater and waterways interactions, riparian and instream habitat repair, the river and stream food web, floodplains and wetlands restoration, traditional owner management.
