Event description
Let's talk about AntiRacism, a Power and Privilege Webinar
When: March 21 10am - noon
Where: Via zoom
How much: Free
What: a webinar on Power and Privilege with a focus on AntiRacism
Discussion topics include:
- Types and sources of power
- Understanding intersectionality with the "Wheel of Privilege"
- Healthy use of power and privilege
- "Not Racist" and AntiRacism
For those who:
- want to explore your own racism in a facilitated space
- are passionate about making a difference and care about social justice
- want to better understand your own power and privilege and learn to use them well
- are values-based and purpose-driven
- have a strong desire to improve your impact and learn to share power
Why:
- because talking about our own racism is important
- learning about racism is a privilege, those who experience it don't have a choice
- the world needs more empowered leaders who understand their own power and privilege and strive to use them in healthy ways
- because there are few places to talk about power and privilege
- disempowered changemakers burn out
- because power and privilege are not bad in and of themselves
Who by: Facilitated by Leadership Futurist, Tathra Street
Why Me:
- I have explored my own racism and strive to be AntiRacist
- I used to think about power and privilege in a way that left me feeling disempowered and guilty
- I have learned new ways to be with my power and privilege and want to teach what I am learning
- I used to think privilege was bad and that being 'underprivileged' was worse
- I used to think power equalled abuse of power and that being 'disempowered' was my own fault
- Now I focus on how to use my power and privilege in ways that reflect my learning and leads to social justice outcomes
How: This webinar will use experiential learning and peer education approaches
What this webinar is:
- A space to reflect on your own racism and your use of power and privilege
- An exploration of concepts that apply to areas where many of us are not aware of our impact
- An invitation to be open to seeing aspects of yourself that you may not have considered before
- Intended to support people to improve your impact with a focus on inclusive leadership
What this webinar is NOT:
- A space for unloading white guilt
- Not intended for those who identify as people of colour. Discussion may include topics that are not culturally safe, unintended racism and microaggressions.
- A place for judgement, guilt and shame.
- Some of these feelings may be present and to keep the space productive and respectful we invite participants to be mindful of the impact of their words and actions.
