PPCG Backyard Connections Presentation

Pullen Pullen Catchments Group presents a free presentation on the importance of moths in your yard and how to turn your old pool into a ‘zero dollar’ pond habitat.

Professor Don Sands will present ‘The intricate relationships between moths, plants and birds’. Most Australian moth species are small and fly at night, and so many that are literally ‘out of sight and out of mind’. Few moth species have been named or studied, especially the smaller species that play vital roles in native plant reproduction and ecosystem health, and as food for wildlife, particularly birds. This presentation highlights several moth species, focusing on their interactions with plants, their role as detritivores, and their importance to bird populations. It will examine the conservation significance of minute moths (Heliozelidae), including obligatory pollinators of threatened plants, and other species that help maintain healthy native ecosystems.
