Practical Tools To Get Writing with Emma Darragh

Whether you don’t know where to start, or you’re looking to unlock your creativity, this interactive workshop will get you writing.

Using a playful approach and a series of timed writing exercises, you will generate new story or poetry material, and bring to the boil any ideas you’ve got simmering. This interactive workshop will focus on developing voice and imagery, and on transforming the mundane into the extraordinary. Participants will be invited to share their work and exchange feedback throughout the session.      
        

Learning outcomes

As part of this workshop, participants will:

• Develop new or nascent story ideas
• Craft more evocative descriptions
• Use sound and syntax to support the themes of a work
• Understand the mechanics of narrative voice

Format

This is an online workshop with a focus on writing craft; it will be hosted via Zoom. This workshop is suitable for writers of all levels and writing backgrounds.

About Emma

Emma Darragh is a writer, editor, and academic living on Gadigal land. She holds a PhD and Honours (Class I) in Creative Writing, and a BA in Writing and English Literatures from the University of Wollongong, where she has worked as a tutor and lecturer since 2019. Her writing has appeared in numerous Australian publications, including Cordite, Westerly, Meniscus, TEXT, and The Big Issue Fiction Edition. Emma’s debut novel-in-stories, Thanks for Having Me, won the 2024 Readings Prize for New Australian Fiction.
