Practical Ways to Explore Morphology - Webinar

Practical Ways to Explore Morphology
with Lisa Burman
Join us for an hour of practical strategies that will get you started with morphological investigations!
English is considered a morpho-phonemic language: its spelling is determined by a combination of sound, history and meaning. It is therefore essential that we provide opportunities for learners to develop a wide repertoire of knowledge and strategies to use as spellers and readers. That is, morphology, etymology, orthography and phonology.
There are many reasons why we would want to explore morphology in primary schools. Studies have suggested that morphological knowledge can be a better predictor of spelling success than phonological knowledge. (Apel et al, 2012 & Siegal, 2008). Goodwin and Ahn (2010) found that teaching morphological knowledge improved phonological awareness.
So, how can we teach morphology in ways that are interesting, engaging and position children as active investigators as they construct knowledge? Our "Spelling Investigations eCourse" provides some suggestions. This short webinar builds onto that and will share some strategies that you can try out immediately. Together with an inquiry stance, they will help you to create a culture of curiosity and provide learners with tools for investigation.
If you can't join us in this time zone, we will email you a link to the recorded session within 24 hours. This will be 'live' for 14 days after the Chat.
