Bookings are Essential

Bookings are essential so that we have contact details and know how many will be attending.

What We'll Do

We’ll start at 2.00 pm with a welcome and introduction. This workshop will be hosted at Wendy and Trevor Wieden's 10-acre rural property at Goombungee. Many members visited 6 months ago for a Garden Insights afternoon, so this will also be an opportunity to have a sneak peak at progress as their permaculture garden begins to take form.

The afternoon will focus on a:

Practical Wicking Bed Workshop

presented by Doreen Jachmann, Nourished Landscapes.

In this workshop we'll learn about how to build a self-watering raised garden bed

Wicking beds have many benefits; they are great for small space gardens, can be planted at a higher density, are low maintenance, and conserve water.

We will:

  • delve into the principles behind the wicking action
  • explore different styles of beds
  • discuss what grow medium to use (plus a recipe for how to make it yourself and save money)
  • how to maintain the heath of the system
  • what plants to grow in a wicking bed, and
  • pest protection, amongst other aspects.

You will leave with confidence to build your own wicking bed.

About Doreen Jachmann

Doreen is an experienced and qualified gardener who is passionate about sustainable living and the benefits of growing your own food.

Doreen grew up in a small village south of Berlin in former communist East Germany. It was common practice that people would have a food garden and raise animals for milk, eggs and meat. From an early age she started to grow fruit and vegetables and take up a quarter of her parents 1000sqm property and created an ecologically well-functioning food garden that had many medicinal flowers integrated with the food producing crops. During her early teenage years, she volunteered at the locally renowned Saxdorfer Pfarrgarten, where she furthered her study on plants and garden techniques.

Doreen has gained formal education in Environmental Monitoring of Soil and Water and achieved a Bachelor in Horticulture as well as completed a Certificate 4 in Training and Assessment and has completed various other courses. Doreen is dedicated to sharing her knowledge and expertise to help others create nourished landscapes.
