Preparing and Conducting Implementation Trials: Mission Possible

Effective interventions exist for many health problems, yet ensuring they become part of routine healthcare is no easy task. On average, only 14% of evidence-based interventions are adopted into practice, with the process often taking up to 17 years. Implementation science aims to close this evidence-practice gap by developing and testing strategies that support the uptake of proven interventions, programs and policies. These strategies are tested in implementation trials.

As the field has matured, implementation trials are increasingly being conducted in Australia and internationally. However, establishing and conducting these studies can be challenging, as implementation trial methods often differ from traditional clinical research processes familiar to ethics committees and health services.

In this practical panel discussion, experienced implementation researchers will share lessons learned, common pitfalls and recommendations for designing and conducting implementation trials in NSW and across Australia.

We’ll explore how implementation studies differ from traditional clinical trials and the implications for:

·       CTMS, ethics and governance requirements

• Managing medical record access, audits, and site approvals

• Funding, costs, and in-kind support

• Adapting and tailoring implementation strategies in real-world settings.
