Event description

Fencing South invites you to attend the Fencing New Zealand President's Cup & Veteran's Sabre 2025 to be held at Otago Girls High School in Dunedin on 29-30 November 2025

Venue: Otago Girls High School, 41 Tennyson Street, Central Dunedin, Dunedin 9016

Eligibility:

To fence in the senior championship events fencers must be 13 years or older at the date of competition.(Fencing NZ Minimum Age Policy). If you are unsure whether the event is appropriate for you/your child, please check with your coach. Minimum entry age is 13 - for fencers UNDER 18 a parent or guardian must endorse the registration agreement.

Veteran Fencers must be 40+ years old on 31st December 2024.


Participants must be affiliated members of Fencing New Zealand who have paid their membership fee for the 2025 fencing year.

FENZ MEMBERSHIP FORM

Affiliations of all competitors will be checked prior to entry into the event.

Competition Format:

Individual events: One round of poules (bouts to five points) followed by direct elimination rounds (bouts to 15 points). There will be no fence-off for Third Place.

Veteran Sabre event: One round of poules (bouts to five points) followed by direct elimination (bouts to 10 points).

Multiple Discipline Entry: If you are entered in multiple disciplines and the next discipline is scheduled to begin while you are still competing, it may be necessary for the event to start. In this event you may be expected to choose whether you continue competing in the ongoing discipline or withdraw to start the next event.

Note there may be a requirement for self refereeing at various stages throughout the competition. If you are not comfortable refereeing please make this known to the DT on the day.

Registrations:

Standard Registration closes on Sunday 16th November at 23:55.

Late entry closes on Wednesday 26th November at 23:55 and will attract an additional fee of $50. Late entry will be at the discretion of the Head DT and Head Referee.

If a minimum of six fencers per event is not achieved, the event will be cancelled and a refund issued. A decision on whether the event will go ahead or not will be made at least 7 days before the event.


Entry Fees:


Individual Event: $80 per weapon + booking fees.

Entry fees are payable via the entry system.

Refunds are at the discretion of the organising commitee

(The sabre events will only proceed if at least 6 fencers enter per gender. If there are less than 6 entrants per gender, a mixed event will be run. Should less than 6 entrants total be received, the event will be cancelled and a refund issued)

Equipment Standards:

Current equipment standards for FENZ competitions are available here.

Note: this is a New Zealand National competition so the New Zealand specific rules are in place. Not the FIE rules

Equipment Check

Equipment Check will be open for all weapons on Friday 28th November 2025 18:00-19:30 at Otago Girls High School

Equipment check will also be open for one hour before the registration time for each event. Priority will be given to out of town fencers.

Fencing South fencers are encouraged to undertake equipment check on Friday night and help with venue setup.

Control marks: It is the fencer’s responsibility to ensure that all equipment goes through equipment control and that the control marks are applied.  It is also the fencer’s responsibility to ensure that control marks are still present every time they go to the piste.


Video Refereeing:

Video Refereeing will occur for the Finals at the discretion of the DT


FIE rule t.122, Fencers will be required to salute each other in way of acknowledging their opponent and the referee.

Drug Free:  By participating in this event, you agree that you have been warned of the potential of being selected for anti-doping testing and you will comply with anti-doping testing if required. Piste Allocations and Results:  Live results will be posted To FencingTimeLive.com and QR codes containing the link will be posted at the venue.

Podium Protocol

All Fencers must wear a Club or National Tracksuit Jacket and either breeches or tracksuit pants together with Fencing Socks and Shoes while on the podium. No hats, sunglasses or other casual attire are to be worn on the podium during the presentation.


Food

A small food stall will be run at the venue and there are a number of cafes in the vicinity of the venue which will open later in the morning. It is still advised that packed lunches and snacks are brought to the venue for competitors to ensure they are on site whilst competing.

Accommodation & Billets

Most accommodation in Dunedin central is within drivable distance of Otago Girls High School.
Please Google “Dunedin Central accommodation” to find an up to date list of accommodation, though as noted above most accommodation within Dunedin will be close by.

We are considering organising a casual dinner on the Saturday evening. Please advise if you are interested at checkout so that we can get an idea of numbers.
