Event description

Join the DC History Center and historian José Gutierrez for a walking tour of Adams Morgan's Latinx LGBTQ+ history.

Parades and parties aren't the only way to celebrate Pride! With threats from the current Presidential Administration to the lives of queer, trans, and Latinx Washingtonians, it's more important than ever to learn from the past. Party smarter by honoring the people and places who have survived, thrived, and preserved LGBTQ+ DC for us to celebrate this Pride month.

Join us Thursday, June 12 at 6 pm to learn the LGBTQ+ Latinx history of popular nightlife spots in one of DC's most iconic neighborhoods: Adams Morgan. This is a bilingual walking tour, led by historian José Gutierrez. The walk starts in Adams Morgan and ends in Columbia Heights, including information about:

  • Salud Inc. one of the first DC Latino HIV/AIDS organizations
  • El Faro the first DC Latinx LGBTQ bar
  • bar Noa Noa
  • Restaurant Perry’s
  • Restaurant El Migueleno
  • Churreria Madrid
  • and more!

Why this tour?

The DC History Center's Latino/a/x Advisory Group (LAG) comprises community members, scholars, artists, activists, and educators who represent a myriad of DC’s Latino/a/x communities. The LAG is crafted to bring together diverse perspectives from a wide range of national, gender, sexual orientation, and multi-generational identities to disrupt patterns of cultural extraction and monolithic narratives. The LAG informs and influences the DC History Center’s incorporation of local Latino/a/x community histories in programs, education, exhibits, research, and scholarship. José Gutierrez is a founding member of the group.
