Description

A two day, in person workshop for those interested in the practice of making LARPs.

Tools and reflections, situated within a flourishing Victorian LARP ecology, to be used, adapted or held in contrast.

With a focus on the process of how A Dance of Ribbons was made. Diverse perspectives from a large creative team, built over three years, and often invisible in player interfaces.

A full view behind the curtain of our philosophies, decisions, culture, frameworks, and experiments that worked and didn't.

FAQs

  • Will your templates still be open source?

At the end of A Dance of Ribbons III we promised to make our materials and templates open source for future LARP makers.

However it became clear when we started organising this, that most of our templates in isolation don't properly articulate how or why they were used. So much so that we thought they wouldn't be that helpful without their proper context.

This workshop is an opportunity to hold space for how and why the work was made, in the room and in conversation with the creative team.

Open source materials (including recordings from this workshop) will be released later in the year for free and for anyone.

  • Do I need to be making a LARP to attend?

Nup! We're framing content covered to be helpful for those who are making LARPs and for those who are simply interested in the process.

We also don't want to portray the workshop as a definitive guide on how one must make a LARP. The content covers specifically how A Dance of Ribbons was made. We hope the tools and reflections shared can be used, adapted or held in contrast to your own processes.

  • What will be covered?

Deep thinking around process delivered from different teams, including (but not limited to):

    • How to form, hold and guide an idea

    • Team culture and structure (ritual, rhythms, care, communication and sustainability)

    • Logistics (professional systems to enable responsibility and care)

    • Mechanics (designing intuitive and invisible systems)

    • Story (Playground design, responsivity and co-authoring with players)

    • Community & Culture (Trust, generosity, and cultivation)

    • Aesthetics (economy and efficiency of choice)

    • Access (interweaving the social model of disability into layers of design).

    • Production (where preparation and on the fly ambition collide)

    • Marketing (community building, communication and tone setting).

  • What do I need to bring?
    • Water bottle

    • Notebook or laptop

    • Curiosity

PLEASE NOTE: This workshop series is not catered. There will be long enough lunch breaks to either eat your own food or buy food near by.

  • Do I need to attend for the entire two days?

Tickets are priced off two days of attendance. We won't be offering one day tickets.

While you're welcome to come and go as you like, we encourage you to attend the entire two days of the workshop so that our efforts in communicating a holistic understanding of process is properly delivered.

  • I have specific Access needs, can I get in touch?

    Yes please!!!

You can email us on contact@comeandlisten.com.au and we'll do what we can to accommodate.

  • Why is the event ticketed?

The Ribbons Collective are spending three months preparing this workshop. Ticket prices are functioning as a nominal fee for the large team, reflecting our commitment to valuing creative labour.

We have included a subsidised ticker (with no questions asked) to ensure the workshop is still accessible to anyone facing financial difficulty (which we totally get at the moment!)

If paying still doesn't feel right - our open source materials will still be available for free later in the year.
