Professional Development Workshops - Gundagai HS

Gundagai HS is hosting TESEP Professional Development Workshops on Tuesday 5 August 2025, from 9.00am to 3.00pm on the TESEP rock and critical minerals kits and integrated resources, Seismology and Earthquakes of Your Region, Plate Tectonics, and Energy and the Energy Transition.

Rock and Critical Minerals Kits: Introduction to the Rock and Critical Minerals Kits and the plate tectonics poster and integrated teaching (rock, mineral and big picture plate tectonics stories). This PD will include hands-on exercises and focus on Year 8.

Seismology & Earthquakes of Your Region

The Australian Seismometers in Schools Program started in ~2011 and now has installed over 50 research-grade seismometers across Australia. Seismometers measure seismic activity across the planet and help geoscientists determine the location, magnitude and depth of earthquakes, predict where earthquakes may occur, and map the internal structure of the Earth from tectonic plate boundaries to the core. This PD workshop uses actual Australian plate seismometer recordings from the Australian Seismometers in Schools Program, and the faults and geology of earthquake-prevalent regions are used as the basis for a refresher on earthquakes and the use of these regionally-located seismometers. Hands-on exercises demonstrate how to observe, interpret and measure data from seismometers in schools across the country, using actual earthquake recordings from the interaction of the Indo-Australian Plate with neighbouring plates in Asia, as well as with the Pacific Plate in places like New Zealand and Tonga. Local and regional geology including faults, mountain-ranges, old subduction zones and volcanic chains are used to illustrate why different parts of Australia and the planet are susceptible to earthquakes – with local examples to the host school. Relevant to Years 7 to 12, particularly Year 8 Geography and Earth and Space Sciences.

Plate Tectonics

A guided journey through the rock cycle from intrusion to mineralised veins, volcano to sediment and everything inbetween. We will also show you how to the TESEP rock-kit and plate tectonics poster (see below), as well as all the online resources on the TESEP website. We will also dive into the Earth processes that drive plate tectonics. This PD also explains how the theory of Plate Tectonics was developed and how this relatively new paradigm not only explains why the Earth is so dynamic but also how it can be used to reconstruct the past appearance of the planet, predict the most likely locations of mineral and hydrocarbon deposits and explain the distribution patterns of fossil and extant animals and plants. Integrated with plate tectonics poster. Relevant to Year 8.

Energy & the Energy Transition

Energy has a transformational impact on the quality of human life. It impacts every facet of what we do and how we live making energy one of the most important issues of our time. We require nothing short of a complete transformation of how we produce, transport and consume energy. However, energy, the environment and the economy are intimately linked and the four pillars of energy security (i.e., affordability, availability, reliability and sustainability) must be maintained. Relevant to Years 9 to 12.
