Progressive Foreign Policy and the 2026 Election

The coalition government says it has ‘reset’ New Zealand’s foreign policy for a more uncertain and dangerous world: doubling military spending, diversifying trade away from China, and aligning strategically with Trump’s United States. But with muted support for international law and silence on Gaza and the war on Iran, to potential AUKUS involvement and increasing assertiveness in the Pacific, opponents have instead accused the government of abandoning longstanding traditions and the principled, independent foreign policy that appeared fit for an emerging multipolar reality.

As the 2026 Election nears and manifestos are released, a foreign policy platform appears to be consolidating across opposition parties, with a recommitment to Te Tiriti, climate action, international law, nuclear disarmament, and Pacificrelationships at its heart. Difficult questions remain about priorities and red lines in any future coalition.
