Guest speakers:

Dr Michael Holmes - Urologist, Urology Waikato

Michael is a senior urology consultant working in both public and private in Hamilton since 2000, with an interest in prostate cancer. He graduated from Otago Medical School in

1988, entered the urology programme around 1994 and completed a fellowship year in reconstruction and cancer surgery in Cardiff in 1999/2000.

Michael has a strong interest in the management of prostate biopsies both in terms of diagnosis and the complications that are caused. He received a research grant from PCFNZ in 2010 for this work and has received several awards for his research in this area. He introduced the first MRI ultrasound fusion technology to New Zealand some four years ago using a Toshiba ultrasound platform and has encouraged the use of MRI prior to prostate biopsy amongst his colleagues.

At a surgical level he has been very interested in improving outcomes for patients undergoing

radical prostatectomy by open surgery. Some 15 years ago he rejected the concept of robotic surgery and has spent time in observerships at both the Memorial Sloane Kettering Hospital in New York and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester to obtain insights on how to be a better surgeon with respect to that surgery.

Outside of surgery, Michael is married with four children and two grandchildren. He loves living in the countryside with his Bernese Mountain dogs and generally taking life slow outside of work.
