Event description

Come join us in creating feeding habitat for the nationally vulnerable South Eastern Glossy Black Cockatoo and combat habitat degradation stemming from the 2017-2020 drought and the impactful 2019-2020 bushfires.

We will be planting on Ron's property; Ron is a keen member of the Watson Creek Catchment Landcare. This property is part of the Watson Creek Biolink. Ron has Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo visitors that feed on the few black she-oaks they planted here 25yrs ago.  And Birdlife Australia has data of Glossy Tailed on the Peninsula has highlighted the need for more feeding habitat for these special birds.

Glossy Black-Cockatoos are strongly associated with she-oak trees (Allocasuarina), their primary food source. She-oaks are native, evergreen trees with long, needle-like foliage. Seeds are contained in woody cones (about the size of an olive but with a rough texture), and Glossy Black-Cockatoos extract them with their large and bulbous bills.

Our planting will focus on native Allocasuarina verticillata (drooping sheoak) and littoralis (black sheoak).

Snacks and morning tea will be provided.

Please bring gloves, warm and wet appropriate clothes and shoes, water, and gloves.
