About The Speaker

Jayde Richmond is General Manager of the ACCC’s National Anti-Scam Centre, which promotes public and private sector collaboration to make Australia a harder target for scams. Jayde is a proud First Nations Australian. She is a qualified lawyer and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Her legal and public service career has led to improved outcomes for vulnerable Australians through compliance, education and advocacy initiatives on consumer rights and safety. She has held roles at the Australian Communications and Media Authority; the Law Institute of Victoria; the Office of Public Prosecutions (Vic) and in industry Ombuds schemes.

In 2023, total scam losses were estimated at $2.7bn. These scams not only lead to financial loss but also cause emotional distress, affecting individuals, families, and businesses. Scammers use phone calls, texts, emails, and social media to carry out their schemes, making detection increasingly difficult. The impact extends beyond money, eroding trust and security in digital interactions. As scams grow more sophisticated, staying informed and taking preventive action is crucial.

The National Anti-Scam Centre, alongside Scamwatch, is essential in combating scams. Operated by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), Scamwatch educates the public on emerging scam trends, offers prevention tips, and provides a platform for reporting scams. Notable achievements include partnerships with banks, telecom companies, and government agencies to disrupt scams and protect consumers. Public education campaigns by Scamwatch empower Australians to recognize and avoid fraudulent schemes.

Recent scam cases involve fake investment schemes, phishing, and romance scams. Scamwatch advises verifying sources before sharing personal information or money and being cautious of unsolicited contacts. For those affected, Scamwatch provides support and resources, including advice on managing scams and access to counseling services. Reporting scams is vital for tracking trends and safeguarding others.

This is the outcome in this session, you’ll learn about:

· the scale and impact of scams.

· the role of the National Anti-Scam Centre and Scamwatch, and some key achievements to date.

· relevant scam case studies, how to stay safe, where to go for support and how to report.

· the Government’s proposed Scam Prevention Framework.
