Is this what you really want? Reflections on academic life in times of global change

Abstract

This presentation questions why anyone would want to be or become an academic in 2026. Given the challenges of a seemingly endless juggle of workload, increasing pressure to produce more research with greater impact, in an increasingly competitive AI enhanced and resource constrained environment, let alone teaching an increasingly diverse student cohort with greater individual needs, in programs that require regulation that appear to have no end, why do we do it? Yet here we all are.

As we step, (crawl or leap) towards our holiday season refresh, this presentation questions what we do as academics in rural Australia, within global contexts of competition, societal impact and values of knowledge, place and power.
