Event description

Join us for the PhD examination of School of Architecture and Urban Design candidate, Anneli Giencke.

10am - 12pm Friday 19th September

Projecting Architecture explores Anneli's creative practice of projecting tangible and intangible spatial dimensions, establishing the physical model as a speculative tool for drawing architecture.

Anneli understands architecture as multifaceted layers brought forth as drawings in space, using the model as her primary medium for thinking and drawing. Recognizing observation's subjectivity, this process investigates perception's ambiguity and representational tools.

Anneli's research generated a series of seven works translating oscillations between two and three dimensions through tactile, iterative experiments. This led to the schnipsel technique—recycled fragments of texts, images, and models—serving as both framework and creative method to synthesise discoveries and transcend the picture plane.

Indeterminacy and surprises are embraced, while spatial relationships, experiential qualities, and intangible phenomena like light, shadow, and perception actively shape the evolving work. Creating the series revealed the model's independence as a design tool and the interrelationship between its spatial expression and two-dimensional representation.

Anneli's modeling approach surpasses scaled representation to become an embodied practice of projecting architecture into being, generating knowledge through relational resonance between material experimentation, spatial intuition, and reflection. Emerging propositions derive from the performative process itself, challenging conventional media by positioning the spatial model-drawing as a poetic critical lens and creative catalyst.

This research establishes a new dialectical paradigm between drawing and model, redefining model-making through the transformable interplay of tangible and intangible beyond two-dimensionality, enabling new architectural drawing practices and design possibilities outside the picture plane.

Please note no entry will be permitted after commencement of this examination. Please aim to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time.
