Psychedelic Wattle: Australia’s magic trees

Ayahuasca is a traditional Amazonian brew with a rich history. Plants in our own backyard contain the same active compounds.

Explore the psychedelic roots of Australia with ethnobotanist, natural products chemist and science communicator Dr Liam Engel on Saturday July 27th, at the Mountain Culture Brewery in Emu Plains.

Australia is home to over 900 different Acacia species, several of which contain ‘the spirit molecule’ – n,n,dimethryptamine (DMT). Emphasising their psychoactive content (tryptamines, β-carbolines, etc.), Dr Engel will overview wattle’s spiritual, religious, recreational, medical and cultural use. We will touch upon Aboriginal usage, wattle foods as well as related conservation and sustainability issues. Finally, we’ll conclude with a Q&A, opening up a broader discussion around psychoactive plant chemistry and culture.

This ale is cultured with wild wattle yeast and incorporates organic, local, hand-picked, whole, tree ripened orange red apricots.
