Learn how you as a leader can understand the legislative landscape surrounding psychosocial hazards and their legal obligations, and best identify work-related stressors and best practice approaches to prevention and control measures.

These workshops aim to provide useful information and skills to leaders, including: 

  • Relevant WHS and other legislation 
  • How to identify and assess psychosocial hazards 
  • Best practice management of psychosocial hazards for supervisors and managers 
  • Organisational prevention and response (with a focus on policy development). 

About the training

Session 1: 

Overview:

  • What are psychosocial hazards?  
  • How do they relate to gender and equity in the workplace? 
  • Legislation reforms 
  • Sexual harassment  

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will: 

  • Understand the social, cultural and political context of key legislative reforms in relation to psychosocial hazards. 
  • Understand the vulnerability of their workforce to psychosocial hazards. 
  • Explore common psychosocial hazards and how they present in workplaces and common (preventable) injuries.   
  • Understand the concept of a positive duty in relation to psychosocial hazards. 
  • Explore protected attributes, how they intersect and relate to common psychosocial hazards in workplaces.  
  • Review sexual harassment in the workplace as a key psychosocial hazard. 

Session 2:

Overview:

  • Managing the risk of psychosocial hazards at work – Code of Practice 2022  
  • Identifying  & assessing risks 
  • Consultation & HSRs 
  • Maintaining & reviewing controls measures  

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will: 

  • Explore the Managing the risk of psychosocial hazards at work – Code of Practice 2022.  
  • Learn to identify hazards in the workplace understanding the importance of consultation, risk assessments, controlling risks (hierarchy of controls) and maintaining and reviewing control measures.  
  • Review different response mechanisms and reporting frameworks. 
  • Become familiar with key terminology. 
  • Understand the role of the HSR in the workplace. 

Session 3:

Overview:

  • Workplace responsibilities 
  • Examples and legal cases  
  • Positive HR practices 
  • Moving forward  

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will: 

  • Explore workplace scenarios and review case law and emerging issues. 
  • Understand the importance of positive workplace culture in the prevention of psychosocial injuries in the workplace. 
  • Explore WGEA’s Gender Equality Indicators and reporting requirements and who they apply to and why. 
  • Explore the positive potential of workplace consultation and opportunities. 
  • Consolidate information and explore further resources and references.

          Supervisors and managers from domestic and family violence, sexual violence and women's health and wellbeing services who are trying to address psychosocial hazards in the workplace.

          About the presenter

          Basic Rights Queensland (BRQ) is a state-wide Queensland community Legal Centre, providing advice, advocacy and free legal services. We help people having problems with Centrelink or disability discrimination, and women in the workplace.  

          In 2018 Basic Rights Queensland merged with Working Women Queensland. We are committed to providing advice, referral and industrial advocacy to women experiencing issues in their work. Working Women Queensland continues to be affiliated with a part of the National Working Women’s Centres network who promote the status of working women and advocate for gender equality in Australian workplaces.
