Event description

Strathbogie Shire Council has engaged the services Anne Leadbeater (OMA), disaster recovery and community resilience specialist, to provide training to first responders, community leaders and other community facing workers.

Anne Leadbeater is an independent national consultant specialising in disaster recovery and community resilience. Anne has worked with communities recovering from drought, fire, flood and cyclone in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland,

In emergencies, individuals and communities are affected in different ways and require different kinds of support. This workshop is for people not trained specifically in mental health support but who are working with individuals and communities impacted by emergencies.

This workshop will look at the effects of disasters and discuss recovery theories and practical strategies to help individuals and communities. Recognising the important role anyone in contact with people affected by emergencies can play in aiding recovery. It informs participants about:

  • the impact of emergency events and how people’s mental health relationships, communities, and social support systems help them cope and recover.
  • what to expect as people go through the recovery process
  • things that help and things that don’t
  • signs that may indicate a person is struggling to recover
  • where to go for additional help and support.
