The extended drought in the Northern parts of the Murray Darling Basin is undermining the implementation of key elements in the Basin Plan, as desperate upstream irrigators look to save water in other areas like the Lower Lakes or even to ‘Can the Plan’.
The idea of a weir at Wellington has been raised again, with an assumption that a large volume of water from evaporative savings could be transferred to upstream irrigators. Is Lock Zero a good idea? What impacts would it have on Lower Lakes ecosystems and communities?
