Public Health in the South East: Understanding Challenges, Exploring Solutions
Event description
Join us for our October Innovation Series event, presented in partnership with the South East Public Health Unit (SEPHU), as we explore one of the key public health challenges facing our region.
We are delighted to welcome Professor Dr Aziz Rahman, Professor of Public Health and Associate Dean Research, Institute of Health and Wellbeing at Federation University, as our keynote speaker. Professor Rahman is an experienced Public Health Physician and a respected academic leader whose research spans from local community health initiatives to shaping national and international health policies. He is also the Vice President of the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA).
Drawing on his extensive research and experience, Professor Rahman will present an overview of national and regional data on tobacco and vaping use, highlighting its impact on young people, workplaces, and our communities. The Victorian Public Health and Wellbeing Plan 2023–2027 identifies tobacco and vaping harm reduction as a key priority for Victoria, underscoring the importance of this discussion.
We’ll also hear from representatives of SEPHU, who will outline their role as a regional system enabler in reducing tobacco and vaping-related harms across the Casey, Cardinia, and Greater Dandenong areas. They will share insights from the SEPHU Catchment Plan 2023–2028, which places tobacco and vaping harm reduction among its four strategic priorities.
To deepen the conversation, a panel of regional representatives will explore the current situation, highlight practical examples of local initiatives, and discuss emerging prevention strategies. Together, we will consider what is being done, what more is needed, and how we can collectively shape healthier outcomes for our region.
