Theosis, meaning “making divine” in Ancient Greek, was central to the teachings of the Eastern Orthodox Church. It involves two key processes: Catharsis (purification) and Theoria (illumination). This transformative path is reflected in the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount and beautifully illustrated in the major arcana of the Marseille Tarot. Catharsis is the inward journey of both voluntary and involuntary surrender, while Theoria is the outward journey toward an agape-centered life, where love is the essence of illumination.
