Event description

Testimony to the Atom Bomb: two survivors speak

Ms. Teruko Yahata and Mr. Bill Plewright

As a key part of our event, Never Again: The Hiroshima-Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Exhibition, we are deeply honoured to present two persons who have directly and personally witnessed the detonation of atomic bombs. We believe their testimonies will provide a uniquely poignant human experience to those listening.

The first is Ms Yahata Teruko, who as an eight-year-old child, experienced and survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in August 1945. Since then, she has devoted herself to sharing her experience, and inspiring us to understand what happened to our sisters and brothers on that fateful day, and how it should never be allowed to occur again.

The second person is a local West Australian, Bill Plewright who served in Occupied Japan with HMAS Bataan in 1947-48 and visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He is also a veteran of three nuclear tests: Operation Hurricane (Montebello Islands 1952) and Operation Mosaic G1 and G2 (Montebello Islands 1956).

Ms Teruko and Mr Plewright are both powerful and articulate speakers.
