Event description

Join us for an exclusive tour of the Harvard Plate Stacks, where history, science, and art converge. Explore our extraordinary collection up close, including some of its most significant objects.

In celebration of the newly published book Attention is Discovery by artist and author Anna Von Mertens, we’ll delve into the groundbreaking work of astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt. Discover how her pioneering research revolutionized our understanding of the Universe and continues to inspire us today. You’ll see images and artifacts she used in her discoveries, and we’ll highlight contemporary artists whose work engages with our collection. Learn how interdisciplinary research—like that of Anna Von Mertens—deepens our understanding of this remarkable legacy.

What to Expect:
Our bi-monthly tours offer a unique, behind-the-scenes experience of the Harvard Plate Stacks. Designed for a general audience, the tour requires no prior knowledge of astronomy, photography, or the history of science. Highlights include:

  • Viewing iconic artifacts and images from our collection.
  • Exploring our research spaces and storage areas.
  • Learning about the legacies of pioneering women in science
  • Visiting the historic Great Refractor telescope.

Accessibility:
This tour involves both standing and sitting elements. While most areas are accessible without stairs, the historic Great Refractor building requires stair access. For additional accessibility needs, please email us at HarvardPlateStacks@CfA.Harvard.edu, and we’ll work to provide accommodations.

Who Should Attend:
We welcome researchers, students, and curious minds of all backgrounds. This event is especially suited to adults, college students, and high schoolers. Please note that minors must be accompanied by a guardian. For family-friendly events geared toward younger learners, check back on our event schedule.
