Event description

Based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, King Shiloh Sound System is an international, independently operating roots reggae and dub sound system founded in 1991. Deeply inspired by Jah Rastafari, the crew has built a reputation over more than three decades as pioneers of the European sound system scene. Their operations have grown to include the King Shiloh Majestic Music record label and the long-running "Healing of the Nations" live stream on Facebook.

Known as “The Traveling Sound,” King Shiloh has covered more ground across Europe than any other sound system on the continent. They were the first non-UK sound to bring their own setup to the UK, establishing a strong presence at the renowned University of Dub in London. Over the years, they’ve become staples in venues and festivals across the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, and the UK, with their shows frequently selling out. They've also brought their sound to stages far beyond Europe, performing in Thailand, Jamaica, the USA, Israel, Russia, Ukraine, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Chile, and more in a DJ-style format.

King Shiloh is widely respected for their technical innovation. Their Circle of Sound, featuring 16 bass boxes arranged in a circle, and the modular King Shiloh Sir Round Sound (4 to 24 bass boxes in multiples of four), were both developed in collaboration with NCA in London in 2017. These designs have become widely discussed among sound engineers, particularly during standout performances like the regular opening of Dub Camp, where the Circle of Sound has become a crowd favorite.

Their label, King Shiloh Majestic Music, has grown significantly since its first release on July 23, 1997, building a catalog of highly regarded releases featuring reggae legends such as Earl Sixteen and King Kong. Longtime collaborator Dub Creator has played a central role in their Dutch productions for over 25 years, with Earthworks Studio ADM contributing to upcoming works. From outside the Netherlands, Iyah One, a member of the Shiloh family, supplies exclusive dubplates for the sound. Other contributors to the label include Gussie P, Disciples, and Vibronics, among many others.

In the Dutch music scene, King Shiloh has left an unmistakable mark. From the iconic DubY2K sessions at Paradiso in the 2000s to the legendary Bunker sessions at NDSM in the 1990s, their legacy continues today through events like the AmsterDub Weekender at Westerunie, BevrijdingsDub outdoors, and Club Shiloh at the Melkweg. Their Sound System Weekenders have become especially well-known, drawing international guests such as Jah Shaka, David Rodigan, and Iration Steppas, all performing on the King Shiloh system during the two-day festival.

Since 2017, King Shiloh has also worked in East Africa, launching a project with Long Trail travel agency and Stichting Dires Ethiopia aimed at supporting the deaf community in Ethiopia. This initiative led to the creation of the Addis Dub Club, which features the Negus Shiloh sound system—partially imported and partially built in Ethiopia. While King Shiloh continues to operate from Amsterdam, Negus Shiloh is now based in Addis Ababa.

The Healing of the Nations live-stream began during the first week of the COVID-19 lockdown and quickly grew into a vital connection for reggae fans around the world. Drawing from the deep archive of music collected by Bredda Neil over the past 50 years, the stream focuses on rare roots reggae from the late 1970s and early 1980s. It has reached thousands of live listeners, with some reposts exceeding 50,000 views. Today, it remains a weekly staple for fans of the genre.

The King Shiloh team is built around a tight-knit group of members. Bredda Neil serves as the operator and selector, Ras Lion is the original MC, and Majestic B rounds out the trio of founding members. Ital Youth acts as both engineer and operator of the junior Lidj Shiloh sound, with Big Bless as its MC. Other longtime family members include Lyrical Benjie, Papa Mystic, Afrique Asher, Bagga T (Jah Melodie), President Kirky, Iyah One, Red Danny, Ras Iyiapo, Jah Roots, Rapha Pico, and Black Omolo—each playing a role in shaping the sound and legacy of King Shiloh.
