Description

Join us to learn more about human rights and explore what they mean for us in our daily lives.

This creative and engaging session from the Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (the ALLIANCE) is designed to encourage people to think about how we can relate human rights to our own everyday experiences. We’ll hear from two speakers who will help set the scene and highlight how understanding our rights helps us to identify if they are not being met and how we can claim and defend them. The session will explore the right to health and how a Human Rights Bill could be transformative.

Together we’ll spend the second part of the session working to identify and map out the human rights we interact with daily using different personas offering different types of perspectives and helping us to understand how rights intersect. Finally, we will consider the practical actions that people can take to help them understand their rights.

A buffet lunch will be available from 1pm.

This event is part of Scotland’s Human Rights Festival 2026 (9–13 December). The festival brings together events across Scotland under a shared banner to make human rights more visible, accessible and relevant in everyday life. It aims to move human rights beyond legal and policy spaces and into stages, streets, screens, and conversations across the country.

About us

The Health and Social Care Academy is an ALLIANCE programme that creates space for and brings people together to think collectively and collaboratively about the future of health and social care in Scotland. Our work in The Academy is guided by the Five Ambitions for the Future of Health and Care, which provide a framework for thinking about the longer-term changes needed to create a fairer and sustainable health and care system with people at the centre.

The Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (the ALLIANCE) is the national third sector membership organisation for Scotland’s health and social care sector. We bring together people with lived experience, third sector organisations and partners across health and social care to strengthen peoples’ voices and support positive change.

This event reflects The Academy’s wider focus on connecting policy and wider social issues with peoples’ everyday experiences. By creating this space to discuss and explore human rights in a practical and relatable way, The Academy and the ALLIANCE aim to strengthen understanding of what these rights mean for people in everyday life, why they matter and how they can be recognised and upheld.
