    Event description

Our International Group and St Hilda’s School invite you to: Q & A with award winning International Journalist Peter Greste

Peter Greste is one of Australia’s most well-respected journalists and award-winning foreign correspondents, working for the BBC in the world’s most volatile places. From Afghanistan, Latin America, to Africa and the Middle East, he reported from the frontlines and beyond. In 2013, Peter faced a harrowing ordeal. While reporting for Al Jazeera in Egypt, he and his colleagues were accused of terrorism offences, and imprisoned for 400 days. Whilst in prison, Peter wrote letters describing the arrests as an attack on media freedom. These letters were smuggled out of the prison and helped to launch a global campaign that led to his release.

Peter is now a professor of journalism at Macquarie University, and the appointed UNESCO Chair in Journalism and Communications at the University of Queensland. He has also published an autobiographical book recounting his experiences in Egypt, titled The First Casualty.

As Peter risked his life to share unheard stories, his unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity inspired the world. Five years ago, he visited St Hilda’s to share his story. Five years later, we’re delighted to announce his return on April 29th, for a private Q&A in the newly constructed Granowski Auditorium.
