Description

Title

Efficient quantum algorithm for linear matrix differential equations and applications to open quantum systems

Abstract

While simulating differential equations is one of the most promising applications of quantum computers, existing quantum differential equation solvers face a severe bottleneck: due to the encoding of the solution in a normalized quantum state, it can take exponential time to extract an accurate estimate of even a single entry of the solution. I will present a quantum algorithm that can overcome this issue by encoding the solution to the differential equation in a matrix and efficiently solving the resulting matrix differential equation. I will also discuss an application of our algorithm to the simulation of fermions with dissipation.

Speaker

Dr Sophia Simon: Sophia recently finished her PhD at the University of Toronto under the supervision of Nathan Wiebe. She will start a postdoc at UQ later this year. Her research focuses on quantum algorithms for simulating physical systems on fault-tolerant quantum computers.
