This is the fifth workshop in the Qualitative Data Analysis series for 2024, led by Dr Nick Hopwood and Dr Erin Turbitt. It will be held both online and in-person, and it may be recorded.

In this workshop, Associate Professor Jane Wangmann (Faculty of Law) will explore one of the tensions experienced in qualitative research – how to analyse, discuss and present qualitative data while still keeping in view ‘the whole person’. Jane researches in the area of legal responses to domestic and family violence. She is concerned with how the law is practiced and experienced by people (victims, offenders, and key professionals) rather than simply the law as it is written. She has extensive experience in empirical research – interviews, focus groups, observations, analysis of documents – but one of the things she comes back to, and one of the things that creates tension in her work, is how to undertake analysis on that data while also having an eye to the whole. The way that we analyse or code generally means cutting up data into chunks that can be used/useful in reporting research results, and as a result Jane asks herself questions about how this is done, and what that means for the stories that have been shared.

This workshop will not necessarily present ‘answers’ but rather ask questions about how we go about doing this work in a respectful and ethical way, particularly given the way in which the need to include and take account of lived experience is being discussed and acted upon in multiple forums (research of which is one).
